The National Placement and Internship Awards are designed to recognise and reward those employers, universities and students who provide and contribute to excellence within work experience for undergraduates in the UK. The topic of student placements, internships and work-based learning has never been more relevant given the rising need for students to graduate from university with the required employability skills for the workplace.

Thanks to a number of nominations, and shortlisted for the second year running, our Placement Unit was awarded the much coveted title of Best Placement or Careers Service 2011.  In addition, Placement Advisor, Emily Timson was nominated in the category of 'University Careers Personality' as a result of the extra effort she made during a student's placement search.

“We are dedicated to helping the students as much as we can when it comes to securing a placement and we continue to work with them throughout their year in industry, as well as our lectures we also run drop-in sessions every single day for two and a half hours. The sessions are always incredibly busy, but so well utilised” said Fran Shaw, Placement Unit Manager.

“We work closely with employers to build strong relationships not only on a regional level but nationally and internationally as well.  Even during the economic downturn our efforts saw an increase of 30% of students placed since last year, with the addition of 41 new companies sourced for placement opportunities, all of which is great news for those coming to study with us.

The University of Huddersfield prides itself on the placement opportunities it offers its students and is among the UK’s top 10 providers of ‘sandwich’ courses, where students undertake a twelve month paid work placement in industry or commerce. With so many graduates fighting for employment, the University places great importance on ensuring its graduates possess the relevant skills and experience to competitively enter the job market.

The value of the placement experience is evidenced by the fact that, in 2010, a third of computing, engineering and music technology students - returning from placement for their final year studies - have been offered a graduate position with their placement provider.
