Photo and Video Equipment

We have a variety of equipment to help you capture both video footage and still images. Booking is essential for some of the items because they require preparation before they are ready for loan

Available "off-the-shelf"

  • Panasonic TM80 - Video Camera - Leica zoom lens, 1080 Recording, 16Gb Built-in Memory - [3 to loan] 
  • Panasonic TM900 - Video Camera - Leica zoom lens, 1080 Recording,  32Gb Built-in Memory - [2 to loan]  
  • Ricoh Theta S - 360° camera, 8Gb built-in memory  - [2 to loan]

Booking Recommended

  • Sony RX10  – Photo Camera - 20mp, zoom lens, full HD 1080 [AVCHD] video - [3 to loan]

Advance booking essential

  • Drift Ghost S Camera - Capture video with this lightweight action camera.  We can supply a variety of mounts and a WiFi controller - [1 ONLY] 
  • Canon 700d DSLR - RESTRICTED - these digital SLR's have been bought to support the teaching of certain modules so are only available to students taking those modules - [6 to loan]

How to book equipment

If you are planning your filming and want to book equipment check the calendar of bookings first then send an email from your unimail account to "scentech@hud.ac.uk" with a list of the equipment you want to borrow and the date you would like to collect it.  

We will create a booking on the calendar and will reply to confirm your booking.

Additional Equipment

Supports for Camera Work

A variety of tripods, monopods and minipods are available plus some supports to help you capture video on the move 

  • Manfrotto Pixi - minipod - table-top tripod
  • Camgrip – grippy handles make it easier to capture video at low levels
  • Shoulder Rig - help steady your shooting by supporting the camera on your shoulder
  • Shoulder Support -
  • Stabiliser – Zhiyun Crane – only suitable with certain camera/lens combinations.  Takes some effort to set-up and balance properly

Microphones

  • Rode VideoMic Go – Super-Cardioid pattern microphone, 3.5mm jack, hot shoe mountable, use with Canon or Sony cameras
  • Rode VideoMicro – Cardoid pattern microphone, 3.5mm jack, hot shoe mountable, use with Canon or Sony cameras

Lighting 

  • Light Reflector - opens out to about 1m dia, reversible white/gold.  Getting back into its little bag is the hardest part of using it - [3 to loan]
  • LED portable lights
    • YongNuo 160 or 216 - adjustable light output, cold running, supplied with h-stand and one Sony battery (but no charger!)[4 to loan] 
    • PixaPro Glowpad LED lightpad – Lightweight, sits on the camera hotshoe.  Adjustable colour and light output, supplied with one Sony battery (but no charger!)  - [3 to loan]
    • Pixapro Light Stand - if you want to use off-camera lighting we have two lightweight stands - [2 to loan]
  • Chromakey Studio - BOOKING ESSENTIAL - If you want to use "greenscreen" techniques in your video you can use this “portable” equipment. But you will need to book a suitable room and a camera to use.  It is only available for use within the Sparck Jones or Haslett Buildings.  It is supplied on a trolley and requires about 30 minutes at either end of the session to set up and put away 

Accessories for use with mobile phones

  • Rode Smart Lav+ microphone – clips to clothing, use your mobile phone as a recording device.  35mm jack connection.  NB: optimised for iPhones
  • Phone Lens Set - set of lenses that will attach to your phone [macro, fish-eye]

Terms and Conditions for loans

BOOKING EQUIPMENT:  Requests should be made at least 24hrs before you want to collect the items. You will get an email either confirming availability or suggesting alternatives if the items you requested are not available 

COLLECTION: You must have your student card with you when you collect the kit. You are responsible for the items from the moment you sign for them until the moment they are checked back in. 

RETURN:  All equipment should be returned by the time and date agreed on collection.  Don't forget that you must download your files before returning the equipment.  You cannot keep storage media that has been supplied with the equipment. Items should be returned in the same condition as loaned.  It is your responsibility to ensure that the items are checked back in by the technician when returned.

LATE RETURNS:  Every effort should be made to return the equipment on time; if you are going to be late you must call the Help Desk on 01484-472977 to notify the technicians.  Only legitimate and unavoidable reasons for lateness will be accepted.   Repeated lateness will incur a ban on borrowing items.

LOSS OR DAMAGE:  If you damage or fail to return any equipment we may invoice you for the cost of repair or replacement of the item.  If an item has been stolen you need to report it to the police and pass on the incident number to "scentech"

Borrowing equipment from the University is a privilege

The Technicians and Academic staff reserve the right to withdraw this privilege if it is abused
