Out of Hours access to software

Remote access to labs

You can access some of our computing labs remotely from home via “unidesktop”.  This allows you to use any of the software we have installed in those rooms when they are not being used for teaching.

Using Unidesktop for remote access

If you are using your own equipment you will need to install the vWorkspace client first.  It can be installed on Windows, Apple Mac or Android

Once you have done this log in to unidesktop.hud.ac.uk and look at the icons on the left of the screen.  You should see some computer icons as well as a “student unidesktop”.  Pick one of the rooms you normally work in or find out which room has the software you are looking for.

  • SCOM SJ304 – Games software
  • SCOM HA113 – Engineering software

Although these icons can be seen whenever you log in to unidesktop you can only connect within the times shown below.  These hours do not change during the holidays when buildings are still open

  • WEEKDAYS from 21:30 until 07:00 the following morning.
  • WEEKENDS from 21:30 on Friday until 07:00 on Monday

Direct Access to CWG03

SJG03 is now open "out of hours" for most of the academic year.  You will find all the standard software that is installed throughout the School on our Windows 10 PC's.

The area is accessible from the side-door entrance on Commercial Street and is separated off from the rest of the building during the out-of-hours period.  This facility includes access to the student common room and toilets.  The area is covered by security cameras

Students should note that the facility will be closed [along with the rest of the building] between Christmas and New Year. It will also be unavailable in August when the room is used as the main hub for Clearing [managing applications to University Courses].

Students should abide by the following:

  • When swiping in to the facility, it is essential that you do not allow strangers to enter with you, nor anyone who does not carry a genuine student card.
  • Do not wedge open any doors, especially the external door. This will be picked up by Security and may lead to students being asked to leave the facility.
  • There must be two individuals in the area at any time, any fewer than this is a risk and is not permitted.
  • You must obey the instructions of University Security and Campus Support staff and leave the building immediately if asked to do so.
  • You must carry your Student ID card with you at all times and show it when asked to any member of Security or Campus Support Staff.  If you do not have your card on you, you will be asked to leave the facility.
  • You must obey the normal School rules for use of computer laboratories:
    • Do not smoke;
    • Do not bring in or use your own mains-powered electrical equipment (except by prior arrangement and providing the equipment has been PAT tested by the University);
    • Do not consume food or drink except in the student common room, and do not bring any cooking apparatus (e.g. toaster) into the area;
    • Treat the facility and other people's work with respect.
    • Keep the facility tidy by using the rubbish bins provided, especially where food waste/receptacles are concerned;
    • Report all accidents and security incidents immediately by using a red emergency telephone or by dialling 2222 from any University telephone extension (or 01484 472222 from a mobile phone);
    • Report any accidental damage to University furniture or equipment and any non-functioning computer equipment to the technical staff (scentech@hud.ac.uk), at the first available opportunity;
    • Leave the building immediately when the fire alarm sounds or when directed to do so by a member of staff.
  • The student common room is open to allow facility users to access refreshments and take breaks. Its use will be carefully monitored.  The common room must not be used for any other activity including overnight sleeping.

Any breaches to the rules may lead to disciplinary action for individual students but could also result in the withdrawal of the facility for everybody.
